Northbound gray whales diving for food as they cross Monterey Bay

Out on the Bay Friday 3/12/21:

We counted 7 gray whales in all. Northbound gray whales diving for food as they cross Monterey Bay, and along the Santa Cruz coastline. We spent time with a group of 4 gray whales for quite a while, then spotted 3 more whales on the way back to the Santa Cruz Harbor.

For the next month or so, winter gray whales continue their annual migration through Monterey Bay and north to Alaska. We'll continue to see gray whales including mother and calf pairs until May. There have been a few new reports of humpback whales returning to Monterey Bay for their spring-summer-fall feeding season. Whale watching is a wonderful fresh air activity--There is something to see year-round!

Our friend Eric Mailander captures wonderful wildlife moments in Monterey Bay! Thanks!
