8/29/19 The ocean was absolutely flat, beautiful clear blue water. We went back out to yesterday’s spot and saw 2 blue whales. With the sun out, you could see the bright blue of their bodies, just below the ocean surface. Really clear looks and 3 enormous Mola molas (sunfish), as well as their prey: bright orange sea nettle jellies. But the highlight of the day was a visit from 6 transient killer whales. They were spotted just a short distance from the blue whales, and ended up socializing right next to the boat. We watched their playful and relaxed behavior for almost half an hour.
8/28/19 BLUE WHALES!
8/27/19 Humpback whales, Risso’s dolphins, and great white sharks.
8/26/19 Jackpot today! We’re just a little below Davenport, near a 5000-foot drop in the canyon, with calm water. There are at least half a dozen humpback whales feeding at the surface, surrounded by birds: Sooty Shearwater Pink-footed Shearwater Rhinoceros Auklet Black-footed Albatross Sabine’s Gull
Plus, Dolphins! About 50 Pacific white-sided dolphins following the boat, flipping in the air, and about 8 Northern Right Whale Dolphins.
All this week the variety of thriving marine wildlife in Monterey Bay is on full display! We've had beautiful days on the water Santa Cruz to Moss Landing and up the coast to the Davenport "Slow Coast." Join us year-round on exploring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
