This sightings report is generally updated daily to give our clients an idea of what marine life has been recently spotted on our tours. However, some species i.e. whales may not be in any recent reports simply because our boats may have been operating inner bay tours.

Current Sightings: Still lots of Gray Whales going by Santa Cruz heading South towards Monterey and beyond. Our total for the last weekend was 13 Gray Whales, 125 Risso's Dolphin and 40 Pacific white-Sided Dolphin. The Dolphin shows have been amazing!

Current Sightings: On Monday the 16 it was another great day! Gray Whales and Dolphins. Trips on the weekend of the 20,21,and the 22nd had to be scrapped because of bad weather on Monterey.

Current Sightings: This report covers Jan 5th thru Jan 15th. The Southern Migration of the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale is peaking now. We are usually seeing double digit numbers of whales on every trip right now. On Sat the 15th we also saw over 100 Pacific White-Sided Dolphin. We saw them chasing feed and doing spectacular aerial flips and jumps only a few miles from Santa Cruz. Then on Sunday Just 2 miles into Monterey Bay We found a Gray Whale right next to the cliffs in Santa Cruz. What a show it put on for the folks-breeching over 20 times right next to the boat! From Santa Cruz to Monterey, the Bay is 'ALIVE' with WHALES AND DOLPHIN!!!

Current Sightings: Tuesday was a little choppy so we looked for whales in the inner Monterey Bay, and we found! We followed one very cooperative Gray Whale that swam next to the boat for over an hour!

Current Sightings: Monday we saw great variety. After following a single Gray for about 45 minutes a rare winter Humpback Whale surfaced not far away. We went over and watched while it dove on something it was feeding on. Then, again not far away we saw about 12 Pacific White-sided Dolphin. They came under the boat several times! Great trip!

Current Sightings: Friday we had another Killer Whale experience! after getting a quick view of a Gray whale we came upon a Mother and two young KW's. They had just made a kill and were feeding on what we believed was a young gray. the folks watched on for over an hour. It was mother nature at it's most graphic! On the way back through Monterey Bay we saw 3 more migrating Gray Whales just a few miles out of Santa Cruz.

Current Sightings: Sunday was awsome. We saw a Mother/Calf Gray whale heading south. We saw lots of tail fluke too. We also got an awsome show right out of Santa Cruz the Northern Monterey Bay from 25 Risso's Dolphin! Great Trip.

Current Sightings: Saturday: oops!..... We had our first skunker in months! it happens sometimes, But we did see a great show of Dall's Porpoise right under the boat. It was amazing to watch the fastest swimming marine mammal!

Current Sightings: Friday the the 16th: THE GRAY WHALES ARE HERE! Today we saw our first big pod of Gray's heading south on their winter Migration from Alaska to Mexico!

Current Sightings: On Sunday we had another Monterey spectacular! We saw another amazing pod of Killer Whales (Orca). There were six in all including 2 large males, One of which spyhopped right behind the boat! We also had several close drive by's by all six animals. The Ocean was as calm as can be and really added to our veiw of the whales. Awsome trip!!

Current Sightings: Our last three trips we have are seeing killer whales (orca)!! It has been quite thrilling, although sometimes very Graphic.....we have seen a couple of attacks on seals by them! they have to eat too!!

Current Sightings: We have been lucky to have the schools of anchovy so close to shore and so late in the year. We continue to watch Humpbacks feeding near shore. Before too long it will be Gray Whale Season!

Current Sightings: On Saturday we saw Humpback Whale and Risso's Dolphin rigtht in the same area! There were about 50 Dolphin swimming fast right next to the boat. The whales continue to feed in the center of Monterey Bay.

Current Sightings: On Sunday's trips we saw 4 Humpback Whales and about 200 Risso's Dolphin! On one trip the whales got very friendly with the boat and came right over and under us and looked up at all of the people. We think he was people watching!On the morning trip we also saw a few Bottlenose Dolphin right outside the Santa Cruz Harbor. Thhe Ocean conditions have still been beautiful!!

Current Sightings: The Whale action has move out to the middle of the bay. Saturday and Sunday We had a great show from 4 Humpback Whales. We even had a couple of breechers! On Saturday's trip we even saw a great show from about 50 Risso's Dolphin. They were breeching and tail slapping right next to the boat!

Current Sightings: Well, it hs been an incredible week at Santa Cruz Whale Watching and for the Northern shores of Monterey Bay! For the last eight trips beginning last Friday we have been watching as many as 10 Humpback Whales feeding, literally right outside of the Santa Cruz Harbor. The Whales have attracted national news for the past week. We have had feature articles in the Santa Cruz Sentinal, Monterey Herald, San Jose Mercury, as well as local TV. there was even a spot on the ABC nightly news and Good Morning America! The Whales have had literally hundreds of on lookers daily while surface lunging on huge schools of anchovies in as shallow as 25 feet of water. Bottlenose Dolphin have also been joining in on the action on a regular basis as well. This week has been truly historical and truly underscores Santa Cruz as a premiere Whale Watching destination!

Current Sightings: Sunday the 22nd was easy! From Santa Cruz to Monterey the Ocean was flat calm. First we saw a 50ft Humpback Whale less than a mile from the Santa Cruz Harbor. The whale was fluking up on every dive! then we headed offshore and found an incredible pod of Risso's Dolphin. They were breeching and flipping and tail slapping right by the boat! It was amazing, especially with the clear water that day. Great Trip!!

Current Sightings: On Saturday we had a nice show of from three Humpback Whales and over 100 Risso's Dolphin!

Current Sightings: Oh My!! What a day. "The things that occur just a few miles away from where we all live" But you can't get there by car! On Suday's trip right in the middle of Monterey Bay the folks aboard Velocity witnessed one of the most incredible feeding frenzys seen in quite a while. It was a family of Killer Whales (Orca) that had killed a 1500lb. Elephant Seal. We watched for over an hour as the large male, female and her young ate and celebrated their meal by breeching and tail slapping, sometimes right next to the boat! To watch the worlds ocean's apex preditor feeding their family just a few miles out from Santa Cruz is truly amazing yet sometimes overly graphic. Unfortunatly it is all within the order of nature. Monterey at Sana Cruz yet again proves to be one of the top places in the world to veiw marine wildlife. we also saw Bottlenose Dolphin and Ocean Sunfish on Sundays Ocean Adventure.

Current Sightings: Friday we saw an awsome show of Risso's Dolphin! They were only 5 miles from the Santa Cruz Harbor. They were right next to the boat for almost a half hour. The folks got great pictures. Then only one more mile out into Monterey we saw Two Big Humpback Whales. They were Swimming and fluking very close to the boat. If that was not enough, right before we enterd the Santa Cruz harbor, about 20 Bottlenose Dolphin poppped up right on our Bow! They almost followed the boat right in to the harbor! Great trip!!

Current Sightings: On Sunday the 18th we followed a Mom and a calf Humpback whale for about an hour. It was great when the curious calf came right over to the boat and swam right under us! He did this curious behavior twice. We also saw an 800lb Ocean Sunfish! It was a beautiful day on Monterey Bay.

Current Sightings: Sunday's trip again we saw Humpback Whales 10 minutes out of the harbor. We also saw lots of harbor porpoise and we saw a 100 pound Sunfish! (Mola Mola)

Current Sightings: Saturday There were 5 Monterey Humpback Whales feeding along the Santa Cruz Coast. We followed two different groups for almost 2 hours. We even got to see one whale do a Full breech!

Current Sightings: Friday we followed Stinky and companion while they fluked up , swam next to the boat and we even saw a spy hop by Stinky the Humpback whale. There were a total of three Whales only 4 miles from the Santa Cruz Harbor.

Current Sightings: Saturday we followed 'Stinky' While he was chasing anchovies down by the Cement Ship. We saw lots of tail flukes today even though she was only diving in 35 ft. of water!

Current Sightings: Friday we followed 'Stinky' our local Monterey / Santa Cruz Humpback Whale! Today Stinky had her companion with her right outside the Santa Cruz harbor only a half mile! They were just milling on the surface for hours , sometimes right next to the boat!

Current Sightings: Wednesday we saw a total of 4 Humpback Whales out over the North rim of the Monterey canyon. Then on the way back to Santa Cruz we saw a 300lb Ocean Sunfish (mola mola) Then we had Bottlenos Dolphin (flipper) bowriding our wake right outside our harbor. Great trip!

Current Sightings: Sunday we wnt to the same area in North Monterey Bay just 7 miles from Santa Cruz we saw no less than 8 Humpback Whales feeding on krill. We had several close drive by's by animals that were aggressively chasing krill. Great trip!

Current Sightings: Thursday we saw our local 'Stinky' the humpback whale right outside of our harbor entrance! Yes Stinky, She has some pretty strong breath so she has affectionatly been tagged with that title. Then we haeded offshore where we found three Humpback whales feeding on krill. We even saw a couple of surface lunges plus lots of flippers and flukes!

Current Sightings: Saturday was ORCA Day!! We saw killer Whales on both trips! On the first trip we followed a family of 5 whales for over an hour. They had just eaten a Sea Lion! It was the wild nature at work for sure. Then we followed along watching them breach, spy hop, fluke up and pec slap almost as if they were celebrating a good meal. After watching the Black and Whites on the second trip we found Bottlenose Dolphin on the way home. It was a great Monterey Bay adventure today!

Current Sightings: Today was as good as it gets. After watching more Dolphin right outside the harbor, we moved just another mile out into Monterey Bay and found a Humpback whale. We lost count of how many times it Breeched right next to the boat! It also did over a dozen peck slaps while swimming on its back. But the reapeated full arial breeches cannot be described to do what was seen true justice! It was an amazing show!

Current Sightings: Thusday we had Bottlenose Dolphin (Flipper!) bow riding with the boat right outside the harbor for almost half an hour! there were over 20 of them!

Current Sightings: On Tuesday, again it was a very short trip out into Monterey bay. Literally only 100 yards out of Santa Cruz Harbor the boat was imediately escorted by a dozen or so Bottlenose Dolphin! Then while heading to the mile bouy to see some Sea Lions we saw a Humpback Whale spout right in front of the boat. The Whale was lunge feeding on anchovy right at the surface, WoW! Then a Minke Whale Showed up! They are the smallest of all baleen whales. This all took place less than 1 mile from the harbor! Awsome day!

Current Sightings: Sunday we found a Humpback Whale in only 25 feet of water! A 50 foot whale in only 25 feet of water is rare. It was feeding on anchovies in the far Northern Monterey Bay. You could have easily watched it from shore!

Current Sightings: Wednesday was a little tough. The Monterey Bay Humpback Whales were all the way down on the South side of the Bay! We followed a pod of 5 Whales for about 30 minutes. long boat ride today but really calm seas.

Current Sightings: Monday was what we call one stop shopping! Only 5 miles into Monterey Bay we stopped for a pod of Risso's Dolphin. There were abot 30 animals that continually stayed on the surface for about 20 minutes. The water was very clear and you could watch them swim below the surface as well. Then the 3 Humpback Whales popped up right behind the boat while watching the dolphin! We followed the whales for quite a while as well and saw lots of flukes. Then we had a 300 pound Ocean Sunfish (mola mola) appeared nearby.

Current Sightings: Sunday was highlited by a leatherback Sea Turtle just 2 miles out into Monterey Bay! It was on the surface for several minute all together and the folks got great looks at the monster 6 foot Sea Turtle. Then they move out towards the Monterey Bay Canyon. There they found a Blue Whale and 2 Humpback Whales! Great Day on the Bay.

Current Sightings: THE HUMPBACKS WERE DIVING DEEP AND LONG ALL AROUND THE MONTEREY BAY TODAY. IT MADE IT CHALLENGING TO GET GOOD LOOKS A THE ANIMALS- RIGHT UP UNTIL THE END, THEN THE FOLKS GOT THEIR MONEYS WORTH! SDDENLY THE WHALE WE WERE WATCHING STARTED BREECHING OVER AND OVER RIGHT NEXT TO THE BOAT! A COUPLE OF TIMES IT GOT BODY AND TAIL COMPLETELY OUT OF THE WATER!! IT WAS TRULY AMAZING TO SEE.

Current Sightings: FRIDAY WAS ANOTHER GREAT DAY. WE SAW 15 HUMPBACK WHALES IN NOTHERN MONTEREY BAY. THEN WE FOLLOWED ABOUT 30 RISSO'S DOLPHIN FOR ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES. THEN ON THE WAY BACK WE SAW 25 BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN RIGHT OUTSIDE THE SANTA CRUZ HARBOR! GREAT VARIETY TODAY!

Current Sightings: Wednesday was all Humpbacks! We saw a total of 9 Whales this trip. All animals were wathed in the North Monterey Bay near Santa Cruz! One animal rolled over and went belly up while slapping both pectoral fins on the water over and over! It was amazing!

Current Sightings: Monday was another awsome Monterey Bay Whale Experience! We watched 5 Blue Whales doing surface lunges on krill right near the boat for nearly an hour! It was amazing! Then we followed along with several Humpback Whales for a while While Fluking and diving. Great Day!

Current Sightings: Saturday we all of the animals to ourselves the majority of the whales have moved to north Monterey Bay near Santa Cruz. We did not see another boat the whole trip! It was awsome, we had 30 humpback whales and three Blues right next to the boat. We also saw One Big Blue Whale only 2 miles out of Santa Cruz Harbor. Then we saw an 800 pound Ocean Sunfish (mola mola)!

Current Sightings: Friday Started out great! Right in the Center of Monterey Bay we Came upon 50 Pacific White-Sided Dolphin. Many were riding the bow wake for quite a while in crystal clear blue Monterey Bay water. Then not far away we followed 2 Blue Whales Fluking up on every dive. We finished up watching a Humpback Whale Calf!

Current Sightings: Sunday was Amazing! We saw approximatey 30 Humpback Whales We followed several pods of six and eight whales as they all fluked up their tails and dove to Monterey Bays depths, gorging themselves on the tiny shrimp. We also had 3 Big Blue Whales come steaming right by the boat! What a sight that was.

Current Sightings: On Friday we were only 6 miles out of Santa Cruz Before we came upon our first of may Blue Whales that Day. Once again we had it all! 10 Blue, over forty Humpback Whales, and Risso's Dolphin. We saw Breaching, Tail throws, close drive by's and even lunge feeding right next to the boat. Whale Watching does not get much better than this trip!

There were literally to many to count, and better yet all of our sightings are in the northern Monterey Bay only afew miles out of Santa Cruz! We were also accompanied much of the trip by Hundreds of Pacific Whit-sided Dolphin and a few Northern Rightwhale dolphin. Awsome trip!

Current Sightings: Friday We had 8 different Humpbacks in Three different locations. The whale were feeding on krill near the surface. I was pretty exciting stuff. On the way back we saw a pod of Risso's Dolphin that swam with the boat for about 15 minutes.

Current Sightings: Sunday trip was filled with animals! Starting off with on big Blue Whale only 5 miles out! Then we had Breeching Humpbacks! They were also pec slapping tail lobbing and chin slapping, incrdible! We also had a pod of about 30 Risso's Dolphin, also Breeching! Oh ya, We had bottlnose Dolphin meet with the boat right as we left the Santa Cruz harbor! All in all we saw 13 whales throughout Monterey Bay on Sunday. Great Trip.

Current Sightings: The Blue Whale are Here!! Wowon Saturday We were only out 20 minutes from Santa Cruz when we found no less than 10 Blue whales feeding in the North Monterey Bay. We watched them diving and turning while chasingkrill near the surface for nearly an hour! Great trip.

Current Sightings: The Humpbacks are here! Monday we saw a total of eight Humpback Whales in three different locations. The were activly chasing krill below the surface. We saw lots of tail flukes. We also had a great show from about 25 Risso's Dolphin in very clear water. Great trip!

Current Sightings: On friday the 27 we had a great trip Risso's Dolphin swimming right under the boat in crystal clear water, it was so cool! Then they found three Humpback Whales tail lobbing and peck slapping. all animaals were spotted in the north Monterey Bay near Santa Cruz.

Current Sightings: On Sunday it was the same as Saturday, Lots of Whales in the North side of Monterey Bay close to Santa Cruz. But today instead of Dozens of Dolphin around us AND the Whales we had Hundreds and Hundreds!! They were mostly Risso's Dolphin with quite a few Northern Rightwhale Dolphins and a couple Pacific White-Sided Dolphin mixed in. It was awsome!

Current Sightings: On Saturday we had a great trip. The Monterey Bay is Teaming with Schools of Krill, Sardine and Squid, Making for fantastic Whale and Dolphin Cruises. We saw over Ten Humpback Whales and Dozens of Risso's Dolphin just a few miles out from Santa Cruz in the northern Monterey Bay. We followed several groups of 2 and three Whales that were diving down on krill! Great weather- Great Day!

Current Sightings: On Sunday we watched why Mother and Calf Grays Migrate so close to shore! It is to avoid Killer Whales! they prey on the young, just one day after we watched a mother and her young swimming in close to shore to avoid preditors we saw another mother calf gray that was not so lucky. The Killer Whale had found them and had taken the calf. It is a sad seen indeed to watch but it is nature at work! There were a total of seven (orca) in this family that feasted on the young calf for hours, however the KW's had drown the calf much erlier on it was grusome. But they need to eat to. Wow! Thats not something you see everyday!

Current Sightings: On Saturday we followed a Mama and Calf Gray Whale for over an hour. It was awsome to watch her take her young "inside" and through the kelp forest right along the cliffs in very shallow water! Amazing

Current Sightings: On Easter Sunday The Folks Had A Special Trip. The boat Was just leaving the Santa Cruz harbor heading out into Monterey Bay when they spotted four Whales less than a Mile out!! They turned out to be 4 Gray Whales, Two Pairs of Mothers and Calfs! Wow. We Watched one Mom nursing her young right near the kelp forest next to the shoreline- it was awsome! Then the boat caught up to the other pair while these two continued on their northerly migration following the rockiy coastline very close to shore. All the while the young calf was continually breeching and spyhopping for nearly an hour. It was a special trip indeed.

Current Sightings: On Friday we saw all kinds of Variety including Hundreds of Risso's Dolphin, Pacific white-sided Dolphin and Northern Rightwhale Dolphin. the Boat was out over the Monterey bay sub marine canyon today. Then they followed 2 Humpback Whales heading across Monterey bay staight towards Santa Cruz! Great Trip.

Current Sightings: What a spectacular show from a Mega pod of over 1000 Pacific white-Sided Dophiin. Amazing Aerial Jumps and Flips were happening all around us!! They swam right under the bow of the boat for close to an hour. It was truly Amazing!

Current Sightings: The Humpbacks are coming!! We watched our first two Humpbacks of the season today. We followed them for aover an hour staying beside them while they fluked up several times. Beautiful day on Monterey Bay!!

Current Sightings: Saturday we saw a pod of three Northboung Gray Whales. There have been reports of Humpback Whales starting to come into the bay! It's becoming Humpback season!!

Current Sightings: On Sunday the 27th we saw over a Dozen Gray's. The migration is still going strong! One whale we saw only 5 minute out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. It Was a beautiful Day on Monterey Bay!

Current Sightings: Saturday we did not have to travel far. Just a few miles from Santa Cruz we came upon a pod of 5 Gray whales. We followed with them for an hour. Then only a mile away we came upon another pod of five more Gray's! While we were watching this pod a small pod of Risso's Dolphin showed up. Great trip.

Current Sightings: On Sunday we had one of those special trips. We were over the Deep part of the Monterey Bay Canyon. We followed a pod of 5 Gray whales migrating north. We saw many tail flukes, However the real excitement came from the several Huge pods of Pacific White-Sided Dolphin that swam with the boat AND the Whales for nearly an hour. And with crystal clear water today it was so beautiful to watch the Dolphins swimming under one side of the boat and then back again. Awesome trip!!

Current Sightings: On Monday we had to take a long boat ride to find Two Gray Whales. Actually the Great part of the trip was watching about 50 Risso's Dolphin swimming right under the boat in Crystal Clear water for about half an hour! Great show.

Current Sightings: Saturday we saw a total of six Gray's Whales. One Group of 4 were very easy to watch, staying steady beside the boat. we saw lots of Tail Flukes!

Current Sightings: On Friday we had trouble locating the whales. However, what an amazing Dolphin show! we saw about 1000 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins that were right under and all around us for a half hour. Then we saw a small pod of Risso's Dolphin. Great trip.

Current Sightings: On Sunday we had a great trip. The Monterey Bay was quite "Alive". Only 2 miles out we saw and followed a pod of over 100 Risso's Dolphin. Oh Boy, Were they ever Active! Dozens of them were continually breeching and tail slapping right next to the boat. Then we only went out another mile and found the whales! There were three Gray's swimming together. We followed them for an hour! On the way back we stopped and saw great looks at Sea lions and feeding Sea Otters.

Current Sightings: On Sunday the whale migration must have been at its peek. The whales were everywhere! We followed one pod of eight for an hour, while seeing many other whales nearby. We also got a great show from a pod of 15 Risso's Dolphin. And to top it off we saw another pod of Gray's one of which breeched several times!! Flat calm and sunny on Monterey Bay too. Awesome day.

Current Sightings: The weather was perfect for Whale Watching today! Is was a nice and sunny day on the Monterey Bay, and that just added to the enjoyment of watching 2 separate pods of Gray Whales swim and dive for almost two hours. The first pair gave us some GREAT looks in the 30 minutes we followed them. The second group hung out with us for over an hour. Add in the Sea Otters at the harbor entrance and what a trip!

Current Sightings: We had a full trip today. We spent almost an hour following 2 groups of 2 Gray Whales and saw some great flukes! We also saw a total of 10 spouts in the vicinity of our boat. We were also treated to a pod of 15 Risso's dolphins following the boat for almost half an hour. Great Trip!

Current Sightings: ON SUNDAY WE SAW A POD OF FOUR GRAY'S. THEY BARELY DOVE AT ALL! DOWN FOR MAYBE ONLY A MINUTE EACH TIME AND THEN ON THE SURFACE FOR SEVARAL MINUTES. WE SAW LOTS OF FLUKES!

Current Sightings: Friday's trip was quite a treat! Overall we saw seven gray whales. We followed a group of 2 for an hour - they did some great tail flukes! Later on, we were able to follow another group - this time it was 4 Gray whales who put on quite a show with all of their lobbing and fluking. Add in the 100 Risso's dolphins and 30 Pacific White-Sided dolphins who were bow riding for us, and WOW, what a day!

Current Sightings: Today's trip was one for the memory books! We were able to follow 4 South bound Gray Whales for over an hour. They were nice enough to give us LOTS of tail flukes! Additional pods of whales were seen on our trip, but the 4 Grays were our main focus. To add to the show, we had a group of 25 Pacific White-Sided dolphins who swam along with the whales and put on a show for our guests as they swam under and around the boat. What a day! Our next trip is Fri, Jan 14th.

Current Sightings: It's Gray Whale season and for the second trip in a row we saw Killer Whales! We followed a pod of four Orcas including one big male for almost an hour! Great trip!

Current Sightings: Friday was special! After we had three kinds of dolphin totaling over 300 animals- bow riding for over half an hour, we then found a male killer whale! We then followed him for about 30 minutes. Several times he passed within 30 or 40 feet of the Boat!! Great trip.
